Pre-Purchase Radiographs

Radiographs are commonplace in pre-purchase exams. Several factors play a part in this recommendation, such as corroborating clinical findings, uncover potential sources of lameness, or to serve as a baseline. The following is a list of recommended views for a standard sport horse pre-purchase. We request radiographs to be of good quality, digital, if possible, preferring DICOM images. Most importantly, images of the navicular bone need to be clear and distinct with respect to both the distal and proximal margins.

An Alta Equine veterinarian will work with you to determine the best course of action based on your comfort level and financial goals. Customized recommendations on which parts of the horse to radiograph may vary depending upon results of the clinical exam, discipline, intended level of work, breed, age, and resale considerations.
