Pre-Purchase Exam

A Pre-Purchase Examination is a highly specialized evaluation of a horse's health and soundness. This exam evaluates the horse for existing conditions that could present issues for its intended use and identify issues that may require future management. We are not here to pass or fail a horse but to discuss our findings to help you make an informed and educated decision.

In general, a pre-purchase exam will include an in-depth review of the horse’s health history and a detailed clinical evaluation of the horse.

  • A comprehensive evaluation of vital body systems, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, and ophthalmic.

  • Assessment of symmetry and range of motion.

  • Complete dynamic exam in hand and under saddle.

  • Thorough write-up and summary.

Additional diagnostics may be optionally pursued to further assist in the decision-making process. We will work with you to determine the best course of action based on your comfort level and financial goals.

  • New and complete radiographs taken at the time of the exam (read our blog post on PPE radiographs).

  • Complete blood count, including a CBC/Chemistry.

  • Toxicology (Drug screen) at the time of the examination.

After our exam, we will provide a detailed summary report of all the systems examined, diagnostic procedures performed, and laboratory results. In executing a pre-purchase examination, it is important to note that we are working on behalf of the buyer, and any information obtained during this appointment is the buyer's property.
